CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

PEKIN CITY COUNCIL

7. Do you support Home Rule in Pekin? Why or why not?

Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce: Yes. Home Rule gives the City Council greater flexibility and control in how they finance and manage our community.

Rick Hilst: Did not respond to the questionnaire.

Karen Hohimer: Yes. I believe the city should have the right to pass laws governing ourselves as long as we are in compliance with state and federal laws. Home rule would give us some flexibility on taxation that would benefit Pekin and bringing in new businesses as well as homeowners.

John Abel: I support Home Rule. Without it the legislature in Springfield would much more control our own city. Think real estate taxes are high now, try it without Home Rule. Talk to Rockford, IL.

David Nutter: After reading and evaluating the pros and cons of both forms of governing a common denominator is required for both. EFFECTIVE PROACTIVE LEADERSHIP; without leadership neither system will be effective.

Matthew T. Tucker (Tyler): A limited Home Rule for Pekin could be a productive tool for Pekin.  I don’t support large governmental oversight into the lives of The American People.  Home Rule could help streamline many needs of the council and citizens.  My only concern is the councils use of Home Rule too often and for matters other than what is beneficial to even the “least of our citizens”.
